Trang's Story
Earth Camp Commitment
My Earth Camp Commitment is to use less water because every year the water decreases so much. In order to use less water, I’m going to take fewer showers and time myself with a stopwatch in the shower. When I’m home, I would go buy a timer for myself, so that I can time myself when I’m shower. Saving water is important to everyone because we need water to live and for the future.
During the Earth Camp, I experience that there so much thing I can do to help the world. I learn that animal and human are connect, animal need human resource and human need animal to be alive. Seeing water in the Green River getting lesser and the fish are in danger make me think that I need to do something, so that our future become bettere. I learn that to get water from one place to another can use a lot of energy. When I think about waater, I remind me that I have to save water and use lesser water.
My commitment is to use less water. My plan is to take shorter showers, by doing that I have to time myself when I'm taking a shower. I would explain to my mom how important it is to save water and use less water, so that there will be some water in the future for the next generation to use it. I would ask my mother to buy me a timer, so I can time myself when I'm shower. Water is important resource for human!
The world will be different is I don't do anything because it need my effort to make it a better place. If I put my effort to fulfill my Earth Camp commitment it will make a different because I try to help change the world to become a clean one, that have more green and less chemical.
Whenever I see water, a clock, or a wrist watch, these symbols will help me think of my Earth Camp commitment. When I see a watch, I know that I have to time myself in the shower to know if my showers are too long. Seeing water reminds me of saving it because in the future I want a lot of water for others to use, and I will do whatever I can so that we don't run out of our precious resource.
Questions & Answers
What did you think camp would be like and did it turn out that way or differently?
I always thought camp would be like a vacation. But I learned and explored with other people that I first didn't know. Earth Camp was an adventure for me, where I learned about the good and bad things happening in the environment. I thought camp would be a place to meet new friends and work together as a team to make it better. Camping to me is always fun and a journey where I learn about life and people around me.
What did we do at camp that impressed you the most and why?
The thing we did at camp that impressed me the most was working together as a team, but even more like a family. It impressed me that we all knew each other at the end of the camp and I didn't want to separate from anyone. Every camper cared for each other during camp and were learning about each other every day. I feel that they are my family now and I don't want to go home and have these relationships end. Everyone in Earth Camp will continue to be a bright and important part of my life.
Who inspired you the most during camp?
During the camp, the person who I inspired me the most is Sanlyn. She has a very good heart because she always care for everyone on the camp. She always has the first aid kit with her and ready to care for anyone that is hurt. She never was tired or what-so-ever, but instead she always was having fun and had a smile on her face. Thanks, Sanlyn!
Tell me about a time at camp when you saw someone else demonstrate great leadership qualities. What did they do?
I think a person demonstrating great leadership qualities is a person who cares for others, is respectful, has fun and presents great ideas about any topic. As a leader, I would work hard to make everyone happy and encourge them to use their knowlegde.
What did you do during camp that demonstrated your own leadership qualities?
During camp I demonstrated my own leadership qualities by cleaning, help prepare dinner and fishing. I helped others prepare lunch and other things around the camp. I also worked as a team with my partner to set up our tent.
In what ways did Earth Camp help you think about your future, e.g. careers or higher education?
Earth Camp helped me think about my future. I want my future to be bright and green. For this to happen, I have to help the Earth the best that I can. I will recycle more and save water by taking short showers. I would do more volunteer work in my community to help out the world, and make it a better place.
Now that you have experienced Earth camp, how do you view water in Tucson and how will that affect your future actions and choices?
I learned so much in this Earth Camp. I know more about the water in the West, how we use it, and where it comes from. In my future, I will keep a commitment to myself that will always help the world. I want to teach others about what I have learned, so that they know that water is very important, so they shouldn't waste any of it. I will also do more recycling and re-use most of my stuff when I can. The choices I make can change the world and help it to become a better place.
