Brittany's Story

Earth Camp Commitment

Through my involvement with Earth Camp I have made it my obligation to live more sustainably by reducing the amount of waste I generate, as well as encouraging my family to take on this challenge with me.

During the camp we had to keep track of our waste by keeping personal trash bags alongside us everywhere we meandered.  At the end of our meals we all emptied our trash bags into individual buckets with their appropriate labels: recycle, plastic, trash, compost, and chicken feed. Having to keep track of my own garbage was not only gross but it made me very aware of how much waste I was actually generating. I’ve begun to think more about my habits and what I can do to change them.

I plan on accomplishing my goal to reduce the waste in my houshold by using websites such as freecyle.org and purchasing needed materials through thrift stores. As well as doing more home agriculture, composting, and conserving energy and water.

By making healthier and smarter choices in my life I can be an example to others around me and people I will continue to encounter. Hopefully encouraging them to look at their lifestyles with a different perspective to see what changes they themselves can make and continue to share with others.

I've choosen to use the braclete I made from raffia as my symol to remind mysef of my Earth Camp commitment. I've chosen this object because I feel it's important to be aquanted with the nature that surrounds you and know how to use plants, seed, and other materials that the earth provides to use as a natural recourse to create the necessary and luxury items we use.
