Nathalie's Story
Earth Camp Commitment
On Bike Day, we visited a place called Bicas. This place recycles bikes and reuses them, and sometimes they are made into art. When I heard this, it made me think,"Hey, this is pretty cool. I want to do this for my Earth Camp Commitment!" So my Earth Camp commitment is to use materials that are not usually recycled and create art. The art that was displayed at Bicas inspired me that not all materials can be thrown away, they can be used for many other fun and creative activities. Bicas is a wonderful place. They take all kinds of bikes, new, old, and even broken. They take the broken bikes and try to save any usable parts. They use those parts to make new bikes and sell them. The best part is that they reuse old bikes to make new ones. This is better than buying a new bike and then later throw it away. Bicas has a bike building class, this helps you build your own bike with the parts you want on your bike. This is both fun and a very creative opportunity. I love Bicas and I think that it is a really good and effective way of reuseing old material and creating it into something new.
My inspiration for the Earth Camp commitment I made was our visits to Bicas and MRF. As I mentioned before Bicas is like a store, but more fun and creative. They take in all kinds of bikes, unwanted and even broken. With some of the broken bikes they have them fix the bike and then sell it. Bikes that are severely damaged are taken apart and the pecies that are still usable are then used for another bike. They also use bike parts to create beautiful creations of art. This inspired me to take anything that is recycled and thrown away and make cool art creations.
MRF also inspired me to make this part of my Earth Camp commitment. They recycle many materials. When my camp mates and I visited MRF we saw the many materias people throw in the recycleing bin can not be recycled. It was a big waste and a huge waste of time for the employees who separate the materials. It was messy and a big disapointment that not all materials are recycled. That is why I want to make recycled and not recycled materials into creative, beautful creations of art to reduce waste.
To acomplish my Earth Camp commitment I will need the help of my friends and family to collect all materials that are both recycled and are not to be placed in a huge garbage bag and taken to my house for artistic construction. This is a big job for one person do acomplish so I will give permission to anybody I know and let them create their own artistic creation. With this art I will either sell it or donate it.
I will help change the world by reducing the waste of mostly unrecycled materials. There are many kinds of materials that can not be recycled and they are thrown away to the trash thus creating more waste. I will help stop reduce the waste and turn it into art. It is fun and creative, and would make other people want to participate and create their own art.
The world will be less trashy and more pretty. We want future generations to know how wonderful earth is. We dont want them starring at a big pile of gunky trash. My Earth Camp comittment will help reduce the waste we have on earth by finding another way to make it new again.
I chose this picture as a reminder because my Earth Camp commitment is to reuse materials to make into art. This picture reminded me about Bicas. Bicas reuses old material to make new creations like bikes and art work. This is a picture of different bike parts that will later be used to make art and new bikes. This reminded me about the art I saw at Bicas.
This will help me follow through my comittment by reminding myself that not everything can be used once. Using materials a second time is good for our planet.
Questions & Answers
What did you think camp would be like and did it turn out that way or differently?
I thought camp would be more about camping in the woods. I've never been to a camp before so I really didn't know what to expect. I imagined it like how I have seen it on the TV, in the woods with a huge camp fire and everyone roasting smores. Earth Camp was nothing close to what I expected it to be. It did turn out differently that I hoped it would be, but it was way better! We did camp out for a few days. I was so excited because I've never been camping before and for my first time it was awesome! The second day was the best because it felt like I've known my camp mates my whole life! It really felt like we were a family. I had the best time EVER at Earth Camp!
What was your favorite activity and why?
My favorite activity for sure was bike day. It was an experience I've never witnessed before. I have been biking before but only in my neighborhood and the park, but never in the streets! I was really excited and scared mostly because of the cars. I felt way better when we were being taught the rules for biking in the streets and it didn't seem too hard. I loved the bike tour through the University of Arizona. I loved the breeze that you get when you ride a bike, mostly in the hot sun. I liked everything we did on bike day, riding bikes, the farmers' market, and getting a cool icy drink. It was the best time I ever had.
