Deliah's Story

Earth Camp Commitment

Hi my name is Deliah and my commitment is to save electricity. For one thing, it’s a bad idea to use elctricity when you don’t need it. That's just a terrible way to treat the environment. That’s what I'm trying to point out.  All my life, I have left the house, even my room with the lights left on. When it comes to my dad, he also agrees with my commitment for two reasons. Number one, he wants to save energy as I commit to do, and two, save money. My dad hates it when I leave the lights on because it costs him every dime for every bit of light that’s not used. I agree with the reasons. So, if  I leave with the lights off, there will be more energy saved and less bills to pay in the future. If I keep the lights off while not using them, the Earth will be happy and so will my dad.

Another thing, my mom says I have been using technology way to much. She told me she read these articles showing that doctors have discovered that televison, and computers, and cellphones have been causing brain cancer. She also told me I should stop wasting electricity and do other things that are worth my time. So, I thought about it and agreed with her. My aunt bought me a bunch of books written by Andrew Clements which she knows are my favorite books! I have been reading them in my spare time during Earth Camp. I have read two so far and they are “Things Not Seen” and “Frindle.” Now, I am on “The Landry News.”  So thats something Ive been doing instead of watching TV. I also own a bike, but one of the tires is ruined. I'm going to ask my mom or dad to take me to Bicas and get it fixed.

In conclusion, I believe all these situations can be fixed by an environmental friendly way, and a way I can enjoy. I hope you all will try and do the same. If you already do, right on! You’re making a great decision. This is my Earth camp commitment, and I plan to keep it and be proud to be apart of the environment. This is my only home, and I plan to take good care of it now and in the future.

My inspiration to this commitment was Bicas and my aunt Sarah (who has nothing to do with Earth Camp). When bike day came along, I was so excited because it was my first time actually riding around town so I was curious to know what it was going to be like. When I got to camp that morning, a member from Bicas told the camp all about bikes and how to be safe on the road. some stuff I already knew, and other stuff I didn't know. Once he was done giving us lessons on safety, the camp rode all around town and stopped at a bunch of different places and learned a lot of new things. This was all really fun. I'd rather go biking then waste time with TV.

I will make my commitment happen by asking my parents to take me to Bicas and get my bike fixed. I will also make it happen by reading more of my books in my spare time.  I can ask my aunt to help me with my reading.  I will also make sure to keep those commitments by pushing myself to do it.  I just have to believe I can.

I got into this camp because of my good grades. It took a lot of effort to do that. During Earth Camp I have learned a lot about astronomy. I have never learned or seen anything like it before. I saw Saturn, the moon, the sun, the milky ways, shooting stars, and a lot more. After seeing all of that, I want to learn about astronomy when I get older. I think the world will change if I put my effort into that goal.

Every time I want to watch TV or go online, I will distract myself by doing other things like reading or biking. I can also ask my parents to help me with this goal by going to Bicas, or I can ask my aunt to read with me. She is a great reader, which I want to be as well.

Questions & Answers

What did you think camp would be like and did it turn out that way or differently?

At the beginning I thought camp would be easy and short, there would be no homework and be done in just a few days. But it turned out to be fun, long and challenging. From the 10 days of camp, we learned a lot of cool stuff and had fun getting to know new people. I cooked my own food and took my own notes. I learned a lot from the past few days and enjoyed all of it. The homework wasn't hard, and the places we went to were incredible. I made lots of friends and they are very nice. I plan on going to the high school Earth Camp when I'm in the 9th grade.
