Alex's Story

Earth Camp Commitment

To conserve water is one of the most important things to do for the planet, especially when we live in an immensely dry desert like Arizona.  When I came to Earth Camp, I didn’t know how much of an impact I could make on the Earth’s water supply by doing something as simple as taking a shower or washing the dishes.  73% of the Earth is made up of water, and 97% of that water is saltwater. The leftover fraction of that water is freshwater. You may think that that ratio isn’t too bad, but only 0.003% of all that freshwater is potable (usable). That means that if you scaled down all the water in the world to one gallon, then only one teaspoon of it is freshwater and only a miniscule part of that freshwater is potable. Since 80% of all freshwater is frozen in ice caps and glaciers and the other part is contaminated with harmful chemicals, only a small part of freshwater is usable. When put in a bigger perspective, conserving water is more of a necessity than almost anything else.

When I work to achieve my commitment, I will make the Earth better by saving water for future generations of people and animals to use. By saving this water, they will be able to thrive and be able to fulfill their needs with the resources to live.  In addition to that, less green house gases will be emitted from the man-made transportation of water from place to place.  Not to forget that you will save loads of money! Rainwater doesn't cost one dime, so you won't have to worry so much about your next water bill!
