Earth Camp 2012 for Educators

Overview

Earth Camp for Educators gives middle and high school teachers an opportunity to explore relevant content about the Earth and acquire new skills for learning and teaching through authentic inquiry. We will explore environmental change in our region from multiple perspectives, using hands-on field investigation, classroom modeling and NASA satellite imagery. The workshop series will build science skills, starting with guided investigations, introducing field and satellite (remote sensing) tools, data collection, data analysis and communication of results. Each month during the spring, you will practice new skills while exploring regional environmental issues such as fire, water, climate and biodiversity. These workshops will build up to planning, implementing and presenting your own investigation on a Mt. Lemmon overnight. A week-long summer workshop will focus on human impacts on Earth systems. During this week, you will choose at least one of the topics explored during the spring and create a poster for a Desert Museum exhibit and website.

Earth Camp for Educators requires a year-long commitment, from January to November, 2012. Attendance is required at six Saturday workshops (four spring, two fall) as well as a two day/overnight field trip and a week-long (days only) session during the summer.
