Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Area

Date: January 27, 2018
Time: 8 a.m. - 11 a.m.
Organization: Sierra Club - Grand Canyon Chapter
Description: Beat Back Buffelgrass! Join us at the Rio Salado Habitat Restoration area on January 27th from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. as we remove invasive species like buffelgrass from the riparian corridor. Every year we coordinate our first monthly Rio Salado work day of the year with the annual Beat Back Buffelgrass; a day of action across Arizona that engages dozens of organizations and hundreds of volunteers. This work day also contributes to our long-range plans to begin propagating our own native plants to restore the Salt River, as the 24th Street area will be one of our first focus areas for revegetation. As we continue to plan our propagation program, we will be clearing non-natives from the area so that when our plants are ready, we have a stretch relatively free of competition from invasive plants to revegetate. Last month our student committee took approximately 60 cottonwood and willow cuttings from Central and the river. We are looking forward to planting the at 24th Street in the spring! THE MEETING LOCATION IS THE DIRT AREA IN FRONT OF MCINTYRE'S AUTO PARTS. Please be advised that GPS and web-based maps/directions will mislead you. It will tell you that you have arrived when you still need to cross the river. If you are heading toward South Mountain on 24th Street, cross the river and look for us on the left hand side along a block wall where we will be parking. 3445 S 24th St, Phoenix, AZ 85040 You should wear sunscreen, closed-toe shoes (no sandals), long pants, and a hat. If you have a pair of work gloves, bring them along. Sierra Club has work gloves for those volunteers who don’t have their own. We will also have tools. We will have a water cooler full of water but you should BRING A REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE. We will have snacks. The Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Area stretches along five miles of the Salt River just south of downtown Phoenix. Once a dump site, the Rio Salado is now a lush riparian corridor with five miles of paved and dirt trails. Bird watchers have spotted more than 200 species of birds (and counting...) in the Rio Salado's varied habitats from wetland ponds to mesquite bosques to cottonwood/willow forest. Come join us and discover the Rio Salado, an urban riparian gem in the heart of the Phoenix metropolitan area. YOUR RSVP HELPS ME PLAN SO I HAVE ENOUGH TOOLS, SNACKS AND WATER. RSVP to jennifer.martin@sierraclub.org
