Education Internship: Packrat Playhouse

Internship Description:
The intern for this department will help facilitate informal learning experiences in a dynamic play space environment. The Intern will provide hands-on learning opportunities with all ages and assist staff. Interns gain experience with play-based and informal science education.
Internship Schedule:

This program requires a minimum of 8 hours per week for a 12 week commitment. Interns must be flexible with their schedules and have the ability to work weekdays, weekends and holidays. This is an unpaid position and there is no housing provided. The internship sessions typically last 15 weeks and correspond with the following terms:

  • Summer 2019
Internship Duties (including but not limited to):
•Engage children and their caregivers through science based games and activities. •Interpret packrat ecology and natural history. •Encourage visitors to develop empathy for desert animals and teach about the interconnectedness of all living things. •Follow safety protocols and help direct positive behavior •Help organize and prep education materials •Assist Education Staff with Educational Programs •Observe staff and volunteers working in the exhibit and complete an interpretive report (as assigned) •Produce a project or paper
Applicants must currently be enrolled in a college or university (or have graduated in the last year) and have at least one year of study in a related field. Applicants should have a friendly outgoing personality and an eagerness to demonstrate positive leadership skills. Applicants must be willing to endure standing for long periods of time are an aspect of this position. If chosen, a background check will be conducted.
This is a unique internship opportunity that provides the tools towards developing leadership skills while gaining hands-on experience with an AZA accredited facility. Packrat Playhouse Exhibit Guide Interns will gain experience working with children of all age groups, grow their public speaking and interpretive skills, and get experience working in a non-traditional educational setting.
